The Mediterranean Horse Union brings together horse racing authorities, racecourses, and trade associations from 15 countries in the Euro-Mediterranean area
The Mediterranean Horse Union is the first international interdisciplinary equestrian organization between trotting and galloping and offers equal dignity, equal power, and the same responsibilities to all its members. A completely new concept in the equestrian field, based on equality among equestrian realities, countries, and the people who work in them. Established in Naples on December 13, 2008, it brings together 16 countries: Algeria, Croatia, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, and Ukraine, and is based in Syracuse, at the Mediterranean Racecourse. The association, which includes racing companies, bodies, and equestrian federations from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea, is responsible for: organizing international trotting and galloping events in the countries that are members of the Union, establishing calendars and regulations; promoting horse racing in the Mediterranean area countries by spreading their traditions and prestige worldwide; strengthening relations among member states by developing collaboration in the equestrian sector; increasing the growth of racecourses, betting, professional training, and workplace safety.

The objective of the Mediterranean Horse Racing Union is to have the membership, in addition to the founding countries, of all the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea where competitive horse racing is practiced.
An absolutely new project, born from years of fruitful and intense collaboration among the horse racing organizations that founded it, and based on the absolute equality of weight among the various nations within the Association, where the more advanced horse racing countries contribute their experience, while the emerging nations bring their innovative energy.

The Mediterranean Horse Racing Union is the first international horse racing association that brings together trotting and galloping and makes no distinctions among its members, who participate actively with the same rights and duties in its activities. A unique case in the horse racing field, where similar associations are generally structured so that countries with a more developed sector have greater influence, both in terms of decision-making and financial support for initiatives, compared to emerging countries, thus ensuring that the international policy of the sector is in fact determined by those who already hold dominance, leaving little room for innovation. The statute of the Mediterranean Horse Racing Union, on the other hand, is based on equality among horse racing entities, countries, and the people who work within them: that sense of equality from which constructive dialogue originates and which forms the basis of every democratic process.

The process of creating the association was characterized by open, equal, and liberal dialogue among all its members, a discussion endowed with great transformative potential based on mutual respect. Respect from less developed horse racing countries towards those with a well-established tradition in horse racing, which allows them to learn and be guided by those who have a rich heritage of experience and know-how to share. Respect from the leading countries in the sector towards emerging nations, which offers them the opportunity to listen to those who bring new ideas with great openness, drawing from it a driving force, alternative economic resources, and unprecedented planning. The horse racing delegations of Algeria, Croatia, Italy, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Ukraine, in order to establish our association, essentially followed what could be defined as a path of peace, along which they considered everything that brought them closer as positive and everything that divided and opposed them as negative, thus identifying in the union between nations different in terms of development level, economic system, and political order the source of a great common strength from which to draw to develop their own national horse racing industry.

National equestrian federations, associations, and equestrian bodies from countries bordering the Mediterranean and the Black Sea and/or racecourse companies organizing stages of the Mediterranean Championship may be affiliated with the Union. The Mediterranean Equestrian Union is the first supranational organization that brings together both harness racing and flat racing sectors; therefore, since there are countries where the two disciplines are represented by different federations, there are nations that join the Union with two different federations. The establishment of this Association in some way followed a path similar to that which led to the signing of the Barcelona agreement for the establishment of the Mediterranean free trade area in 2010, during which it was recognized that the heritage of cultural and commercial relations among peoples was the distinguishing feature for determining the countries to be involved in the project, beyond mere geographical boundaries, thus leading to an expansion of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership to other nations not belonging to the Mediterranean basin, such as Portugal and Serbia, and to the Black Sea area.
